WatergateA rustic wooden gate, designed by Nassrin, opens the driveway to our 2 bedroom cedar cottage atop the trees, and westward, to a glorious 180-degree water panorama.
Guests will enjoy overlooking Tofino’s fishing-boat channel meandering through giant treed islands and out into the open ocean – however far across the Pacific your imagination will carry you! Within sight, even in summer, are snow-capped mountains. It is our Watergate in Paradise, an ironic reminder of the Watergate on the Potomac scandal that Duart relished covering as a Canadian newspaper correspondent in Washington nearly 30 years ago. From our Nixon deck, peer out on the always-changing heavens, bald eagles soaring in invisible air currents, infuriating jealous crows and seabirds trailing below. Inside the homey living room, with shabby chic and eclectic furnishings gathered during the Farquharsons’ many foreign postings, enjoy framed watercolors painted by Nassrin. Ears, meanwhile, must always be cocked for the high pitched squeals of mating eagles. Rush outside to see a giant pair land on an adjoining tree branch, while tiny humming birds bob at feeders on the deck. Outside our front door, in Nassrin’s driftwood garden, lies the twisted steel frame of a crab trap, mangled by a passing whale and salvaged by a neighbor from Tofino waters... Water Gate is pet friendly and will sleep up to 4 guests
